There doesn't seem to be much talk about whistles but I think there is a lot to know. Not all whistles are equal.
I recently picked up one of those cheap survival knives with a lot of features. One if the things it came with is a whistle. It is a small plastic tubular type with a single vent. Super reliable but not very loud.
I got another one from a spooring goods store and it's the classic black plastic with a pea and it only cost a dollar. It is pretty loud. One hefty puff and your ears might be left ringing a little. One problem that might occur with it is that in super cold weather, the pea can freeze in place leaving the whistle with a reduced or no capability. I have also heard that metal whistles bad in cold weather.
last but definitely not least, I got my package from Ron with my Windstorm whistle and I tried it out like I do all my gear. Someone should have told me to plug my ears or something. They were ringing for a week after that. This whistle will cause hearing damage if you blow hard on it. So I'm telling you. Plug your ears before blowing it or you will not hear someone trying to reply!
